I've spent most of my career moving fast. As a software and AI applications engineer, "fast" is just the nature of the work. But "𝑓𝑎𝑠𝑡" has a cost that nobody really talks about - the reasoning behind decisions doesn't survive the velocity. You ship. You move on. Three months later, someone opens that part of the codebase and has absolutely no idea why it looks the way it does. They're not incompetent. They're just missing the context that was never preserved. When I step away from the keyboard, I'm a singer and musician. There's something about music that's always felt like the exact opposite of this engineering problem - every note, lyric, and chord has a reason, and together they create something that makes perfect sense. Engineering should feel like that. It rarely does. That contrast stuck with me long enough that I eventually decided to build the fix. I've spent the last few weeks leading the implementation of ContextBeat - building and ideating a solution that handles the heavy lifting of preserving your code's reasoning automatically, without adding work to anyone's plate. Just published my third DEV.to post 🚀 Two weeks ago McKinsey said AI coding tools cut routine task time by 46% on average. The same period, METR's controlled experiment with 16 senior open-source developers found the AI-using group was 19% slower. Both measurements are honest. Both numbers are real. Same tools. Opposite results. The difference isn't the tool. It's the workflow. This article breaks down 5 concrete workflow patterns that push past the 46% average:  → Routine vs novel task split (the biggest lever)  → Automated verification harness (cuts review time from 5 min to 10 sec)  → Context engineering (curate, don't dump @codebase)  → Tool-task alignment (different tools for different jobs)  → Prompt versioning (treat prompts as code) After two weeks of applying these patterns, teams typically see first-pass acceptance jump from 40-50% to 70-80% and overall time savings move from 20-30% to 60-75%.
